What Is AI Visibility? How to Measure and Improve It
By the Nyrav team · November 1, 2026 · 7 min read
Short answer
AI visibility is how often, and how favourably, AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews mention your brand when people ask questions in your category. You measure it by running a fixed set of customer questions across several assistants, repeatedly, and tracking your mention rate, share of voice against competitors and which sources get cited. You improve it by being easy for AI systems to crawl and verify and by earning mentions on the sites they cite.
AI visibility is how often AI assistants mention your brand when people ask questions you'd want to be the answer to. If ten people ask ChatGPT "what's the best e-bike for a hilly commute?" and your store is named in four answers, your AI visibility for that question on ChatGPT is about 40%. It's the AI-era equivalent of search rankings, but measured as a share of answers rather than a position on a page.
Below we define it properly, show how to measure it in a way that holds up, and cover what moves the number.
AI visibility, defined
AI visibility (also called AI search visibility) describes your presence inside answers generated by ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. It has three layers:
- Mentions. Does the assistant name your brand in the answer?
- Citations. Does it link to your website as a source?
- Framing. When it mentions you, is the description accurate and favourable, and are you recommended or just listed?
A brand can be cited without being recommended (your blog post is used as a source for a general answer) or recommended without being cited (ChatGPT names you but links to a review site). Both matter, and you should track them separately.
How it differs from SEO rankings
| Traditional SEO | AI visibility | |
|---|---|---|
| Unit of measure | Position of a URL for a keyword | Share of answers that name or cite you |
| Stability | Fairly stable day to day | Changes from one run to the next |
| Main inputs | Your pages and links to them | Your pages plus reviews, lists, forums and mentions elsewhere |
| Where it's reported | Google Search Console, rank trackers | Mostly third-party tools; partial first-party data |
| Competitor view | Who ranks above you | Who gets named instead of you |
Why it matters now
The audience is large. OpenAI said in February 2026 that ChatGPT had reached 900 million weekly active users (TechCrunch). Google now puts AI Overviews and AI Mode in front of searchers, using a "query fan-out" technique that runs several related searches to find supporting pages (Google Search Central).
When a buyer asks an assistant for a shortlist, the brands not on it often aren't considered at all. Unlike a results page, there's no page two.
The metrics that matter
Mention rate
The percentage of answers that name your brand. This is the core metric.
Mention rate = answers that mention you ÷ total answers checked
Calculate it per question, per assistant, and overall.
Share of voice
Your mentions as a share of all brand mentions across your competitor set. If, across 200 answers, your brand is named 50 times and you and four competitors are named 250 times in total, your AI share of voice is 20%. This is the best number to report upward, because it accounts for how crowded the category is.
Position (use with care)
Where you appear in a list: first, third, last. It's tempting to track, but research suggests it's unreliable. SparkToro and Gumshoe ran nearly 3,000 tests across ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI and found under a 1 in 100 chance of getting the same list of brands twice, and roughly 1 in 1,000 of getting it in the same order (Search Engine Land). Their conclusion: how often you appear is a sturdier metric than where.
Citation share and cited sources
How often your domain is linked as a source, and which other domains are cited for your questions. Cited sources are the most actionable data you'll collect, because they tell you which review sites, directories, articles and threads shape the answer.
Accuracy and sentiment
Is what the assistant says about you correct (prices, locations, services) and positive? A mention that says you closed last year is worse than no mention.
How to measure AI visibility, step by step
Take a Shopify store selling e-bikes as the example.
- Build a question set. Write 20 to 50 questions your buyers really ask: "best e-bike under $2,000", "e-bike for heavy riders", "is [your brand] good?", "[your brand] vs [competitor]". Group them by intent: category, problem, comparison and brand.
- Pick the assistants. At minimum ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity. Add Claude if your buyers are likely to use it.
- Define your competitor set. Five to ten brands you actually lose sales to, plus any the assistants keep naming that you hadn't considered.
- Run each question several times. Use web search on, a clean session and the location your customers are in. Because answers vary run to run, a single pass is a sample of one.
- Record everything. For each answer: brands named, order, your description, and every cited URL.
- Calculate the metrics. Mention rate per assistant, share of voice against competitors, and a ranked list of the most-cited domains.
- Repeat on a schedule. Weekly or at least monthly, with the same questions, so you're comparing like with like.
Doing this by hand gets heavy quickly: 30 questions, five assistants and three runs each is 450 answers. That's why most teams use a tool. You can run a free snapshot with Nyrav's AI visibility check, and we compare the paid options in Best AI visibility tools.
Free first-party data to add
None of these show mentions directly, but they help:
- Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance. Shows how often your pages are cited in Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI answers, plus the "grounding queries" used. Microsoft notes it doesn't indicate ranking or placement (Bing Webmaster Blog).
- Google Search Console. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the Web search type, not shown separately (Google).
- Google Analytics. ChatGPT adds
utm_source=chatgpt.comto referral links, so you can segment that traffic (OpenAI).
Common measurement mistakes
- Testing only your brand name. "Is [your brand] good?" tells you about reputation, not discovery. Most of your set should be category and problem questions where you aren't named in the prompt.
- Testing while logged in to your own account. Memory and past chats can colour the answer. Use a clean session.
- Changing the questions every month. You lose the trend line. Add new questions, but keep a fixed core set.
- Ignoring location. "Best dentist" in Austin and in Denver are different markets. Test from where your customers are.
Benchmarks: what does "good" look like?
Honest answer: there's no industry-wide benchmark yet, because every score depends on the question set, the assistants and the number of runs. Be wary of any tool that quotes a universal "average AI visibility score".
Two sourced reference points help:
- In the SparkToro study, leading brands appeared in 60% to 90% of responses for a given intent, even though their position kept moving. Smaller, niche markets produced more stable answers than large categories.
- In Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands, visibility in AI answers was strongly linked to how often a brand is mentioned across the web (0.664 correlation with ChatGPT visibility) and on YouTube (about 0.737), and only weakly linked to Domain Rating (0.266 for ChatGPT) (Ahrefs). These are correlations, not proof of cause.
The practical benchmark is your competitors. If the market leader in your niche is named in 70% of answers and you're at 10%, that gap is your target.
How to improve AI visibility
The fixes fall into four groups.
1. Make sure AI systems can read you
Allow the search crawlers, such as OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot, which OpenAI says is "used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features" (OpenAI). For Google's AI features, your page has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet; Google says there are no extra requirements beyond that. Check your bot access with the free AI bots checker.
2. Answer the questions on your own site
For every question in your set, have a page that answers it directly in the first few sentences. Add FAQ sections, comparison pages and clear service or product details. Our Google AI Overviews checklist covers the page-level details.
3. Get mentioned where assistants look
Take the most-cited domains from your measurement and work through them: claim and complete directory profiles, earn reviews, pitch the "best of" articles, contribute to relevant communities and get your products in front of YouTube reviewers. Ahrefs' tracking of ChatGPT citations shows Reddit, Wikipedia, review sites and major publishers among the most cited sources (Ahrefs).
4. Keep your facts consistent
Use the same name, address, phone, prices and service descriptions everywhere. Add Organization schema with sameAs links to your official profiles. Fix wrong information wherever an assistant picked it up.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good AI visibility score?
There is no universal benchmark yet, because scores depend on the questions, assistants and number of runs you use. The useful comparison is against your direct competitors on the same question set. As a reference point, SparkToro's research found leading brands appeared in 60% to 90% of answers for a given intent.
Is AI visibility the same as SEO?
No, but they overlap. SEO measures where your pages rank in search results; AI visibility measures whether assistants name or cite you in their answers. Good SEO helps, since Google's AI features and ChatGPT search both draw on web search, but reviews, directories and third-party mentions carry extra weight.
How many prompts do I need to measure AI visibility?
Enough to represent how real customers ask, run more than once each. A small business can start with 20 to 50 questions, each run several times per assistant. Because answers vary from run to run, more runs give a more stable number.
Can Google Search Console show my AI Overviews traffic?
Partly. Google says sites appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in overall Search Console data under the Web search type, but not broken out separately. It tells you about clicks, not whether you were named in the answer text.
Why should I track cited sources, not just mentions?
Cited sources show where the assistant got its information. If ChatGPT names your competitor and cites a review site or a 'best of' list, that site is where you need to be listed or mentioned. It turns a score into a to-do list.
