AEO vs GEO vs SEO: What's the Difference in 2026?
By the Nyrav team · November 1, 2026 · 8 min read
Short answer
SEO gets your pages ranked in search results, AEO gets your content chosen as the direct answer to a question, and GEO gets your business mentioned and cited inside AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. They are layers of the same work, not rival strategies: GEO and AEO sit on top of a crawlable, well-ranked site. A small business should fix its SEO basics first, then restructure key pages into clear answers, then build mentions on the sites AI tools cite.
SEO (search engine optimization) gets your pages ranked in search results. AEO (answer engine optimization) gets your content chosen as the direct answer to a question. GEO (generative engine optimization) gets your business named and cited inside AI-written answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.
They are not three competing strategies. They are three layers of the same job, and each layer depends on the one below it. The rest of this guide explains each term, shows exactly where they differ, and gives a small business a practical order of work.
What is SEO?
SEO is the work of getting your pages crawled, indexed and ranked by search engines, mainly Google and Bing. The output is a position in a list of ten blue links (plus maps, shopping and other result types). Success is measured in rankings, impressions, clicks and the leads or sales those clicks produce.
The core of SEO has not changed much: technical health (crawlable, indexable, reasonably fast), relevant content that matches what people search for, and authority signals such as links and reviews.
Why SEO is still the foundation
Google is explicit about this. Its AI features documentation says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that there are no additional requirements or special optimizations needed. At a 2025 Search Central event, Google's Gary Illyes reportedly told attendees that normal SEO practices are enough to appear in AI Overviews.
Microsoft says much the same about Bing and Copilot: its guide to inclusion in AI search answers starts with crawlability, metadata, internal linking and backlinks.
What is AEO (answer engine optimization)?
AEO is the practice of structuring content so that a search engine or assistant can lift it out as the answer to a specific question. The term predates ChatGPT. It grew up around featured snippets, "People also ask" boxes and voice assistants that read out one answer.
AEO is mostly about page structure and wording:
- Put the question in a heading and answer it in the first one or two sentences below.
- Keep answers short enough to quote, then add detail after.
- Use lists for steps, tables for comparisons, and FAQ sections for the follow-up questions people really ask.
- Add accurate structured data (schema) that matches what is visible on the page.
Microsoft's guidance captures the idea well: AI assistants break pages into smaller pieces and assemble answers from the strongest ones, so each section should work as a self-contained, clearly labeled unit, and answers should still make sense when extracted from the page.
An AEO example
A dentist in Austin has a page called "Services." Nothing on it directly answers "How much does a dental crown cost in Austin?" An AEO rewrite adds an H2 with that exact question, a two-sentence answer with a real price range, then detail on what changes the price and whether insurance covers it. The page is now quotable for that question.
What is GEO (generative engine optimization)?
GEO is the practice of increasing how often generative AI tools mention, recommend and cite your business when they write answers. The term was coined in the research paper GEO: Generative Engine Optimization by researchers from Princeton and others, published at KDD 2024. The authors reported that content changes such as adding citations, quotations and statistics could boost visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40%, and that results varied by subject area. In the same study, keyword stuffing did not help.
GEO goes beyond a single page. An AI model answering "best e-bike shops in Denver" might pull from your site, from review sites, from Reddit threads, from local news and from directory listings. So GEO includes:
- Being mentioned at all. Does the assistant name your business for the questions your customers ask?
- Competitor share. Which competitors does it name instead of you, and how often?
- Citations. Which websites does it link or rely on as sources, and are you on those sites?
- Accuracy. Is what it says about your prices, location and services correct?
Why GEO matters now
AI answers change what people click. A Pew Research Center study of 900 U.S. adults' browsing in March 2025 found users clicked a traditional search result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, versus 15% when it did not. If fewer people click, being named inside the answer itself matters more.
AEO vs GEO vs SEO: comparison table
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank pages in search results | Be the direct answer to a question | Be mentioned, recommended and cited in AI answers |
| Where it shows | Google and Bing results pages | Featured snippets, People also ask, voice answers, AI answer boxes | ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Copilot |
| Unit of work | Page and keyword | Question and answer passage | Brand, entity and the sources AI tools trust |
| Main levers | Technical health, relevant content, links | Question-led headings, short answers, lists, tables, FAQ, schema | Clear facts about your business, mentions on cited sites, reviews, consistent listings, quotable content |
| Success metric | Rankings, clicks, conversions | Snippet and answer wins | Mention rate, share of voice vs competitors, citations |
| Main risk if ignored | You are not found | Someone else's wording becomes the answer | AI tools recommend competitors by name |
Where AEO, GEO and SEO overlap
Think of it as a stack. SEO makes your pages findable. AEO makes them easy to quote. GEO makes your business the one worth quoting, on your site and across the web.
Shared foundations
- Crawl access. Search engines and AI assistants both need to fetch your pages. OpenAI, for example, documents separate crawlers: OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search and GPTBot for model training. Blocking the search crawler in robots.txt can keep you out of ChatGPT search answers.
- Clear, specific content. Vague claims like "innovative solutions" help nobody. Prices, locations, specs, opening hours and named services help every layer.
- Authority. Links and mentions from respected sites help rankings, and the same sites are often the ones AI tools cite.
- Structured data. Schema that matches the visible page helps search engines understand it. Google notes it is not required for AI features, but it remains useful for rich results and clarity.
Where they genuinely differ
- SEO is page-centric; GEO is reputation-centric. You can rank well and still not be named by ChatGPT if the review sites and lists it trusts never mention you.
- AEO rewards brevity; SEO often rewards depth. The best pages do both: a short answer up top, depth below.
- Measurement is different. Rankings are fairly stable and trackable. AI answers vary by wording, by tool and over time, so you need repeated checks across several assistants.
What a small business should do first
You do not need three separate projects. Here is the order we recommend, with a realistic first month in mind.
Step 1: Fix the SEO basics (week 1)
- Check that your key pages are indexed in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
- Make sure robots.txt and your firewall or CDN are not blocking search and AI crawlers. You can test this free with Nyrav's AI bots checker.
- Give every important page a unique, descriptive title and meta description.
- Make sure your business name, address, phone and service area are consistent on your site and your Google Business Profile.
Step 2: Turn key pages into answers (week 2)
- List the 10 to 20 questions customers ask before they buy. Your sales calls, emails and reviews are the best source.
- Map each question to one page. Create pages where none exist.
- Put the question in an H2 and answer it in the first two sentences. Then add detail, a list or table, and a short FAQ.
- Add FAQ or product schema only where it matches what is on the page.
For Google specifically, see our Google AI Overviews checklist.
Step 3: Check what AI tools say about you (week 3)
Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Mode the questions from step 2, phrased the way a customer would: "best PPC agency for law firms," "e-bike shop near me that does repairs." Record whether you are named, who is named instead, and which sites are cited. You can run this free with Nyrav's AI visibility check.
Bing now offers an AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools that shows how often your pages are cited in Copilot and Bing AI answers, which is a useful free data source.
Step 4: Get onto the sources AI tools cite (week 4 onward)
The citations from step 3 are your target list. For a Shopify store selling e-bikes, that might be two review sites, a Reddit community and a cycling magazine's buyer's guide. For a PPC agency, it is often agency directories and "best agencies for X" roundups.
- Claim and complete every relevant directory and marketplace profile.
- Ask happy customers for reviews on the platforms that get cited.
- Pitch the writers of cited roundups with something genuinely useful: data, a quote or a product to test.
- Publish content that is worth citing, such as original pricing data, clear comparisons and honest guides.

What to skip for now
Skip tactics that promise "AI rankings" through tricks. Keyword stuffing did not improve visibility in the GEO research. Google says you do not need special AI text files to appear in its AI features. Files like llms.txt are cheap to add but should not come before the steps above.
The bottom line
SEO, AEO and GEO are one discipline viewed at three zoom levels: the site, the answer and the brand. A small business wins by getting the basics right, writing pages that answer real questions plainly, and showing up on the sites AI tools already trust. Then it checks the results regularly, because AI answers keep changing.
If you want this as a routine rather than a project, Nyrav checks every week whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode name your business, shows which competitors and sources they use instead, and drafts the page fixes for you to approve.
Frequently asked questions
What is GEO in marketing?
GEO stands for generative engine optimization. It is the practice of making your business more likely to be mentioned, recommended and cited in answers written by generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. The term comes from a 2023 research paper by Princeton and others that was later published at KDD 2024.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
They overlap heavily and many people use them interchangeably. AEO (answer engine optimization) is older and focuses on making your content the single, direct answer to a question, as in featured snippets and voice assistants. GEO is broader: it covers whether AI tools mention your brand at all, which competitors they name instead, and which sources they cite.
Does SEO still matter if people use ChatGPT and AI Overviews?
Yes. Google says pages must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that normal SEO best practices apply. AI assistants that search the web, like ChatGPT search and Perplexity, also lean on pages that are crawlable and well regarded. Weak SEO usually means weak AI visibility.
Do I need special files or markup for AI search?
Not for Google. Google's own documentation says you don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup to appear in its AI features. Files like llms.txt are optional extras with uncertain support, so treat them as low priority compared with content, crawlability and reputation.
What should a small business do first: SEO, AEO or GEO?
Start with SEO hygiene: make sure your site is indexed, fast enough, and that AI crawlers are not blocked. Next, rewrite your most important pages so each one answers a real customer question in the first two sentences. Then check what AI assistants say about you and work on getting listed and mentioned on the sites they cite.
How do I measure GEO results?
Ask the AI tools the questions your customers ask and record whether your business is named, where, and which sources are cited. Repeat this on a schedule, because answers change. Bing Webmaster Tools now also reports citations in Copilot and Bing AI answers, and Google counts AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic inside the Search Console Performance report.
