How to Get Recommended by ChatGPT: A Step-by-Step Plan

By the Nyrav team · November 1, 2026 · 8 min read

Short answer

ChatGPT recommends businesses it can find and verify on the web: it searches through third-party providers such as Bing, reads pages with its own crawler, and leans on sources like review sites, directories, Reddit and lists that mention you. To get recommended, let OpenAI's search crawler in, keep your business details consistent everywhere, publish pages that answer your customers' exact questions, and earn mentions and reviews on the sites ChatGPT already cites.

ChatGPT recommends businesses that it can find, read and cross-check on the open web. When someone asks "who's the best dentist in Austin?", ChatGPT usually runs a web search, reads a handful of pages (review sites, directories, list articles, the businesses' own sites) and names the businesses that show up consistently across them. Getting recommended comes down to three things: be readable by ChatGPT's search systems, be described the same way everywhere, and be mentioned by the sources it already trusts.

The rest of this guide explains how that selection works, based on what OpenAI has published and the best independent research available, then gives you a step-by-step plan.

How ChatGPT decides which businesses to name

There's no single "ChatGPT ranking algorithm" you can reverse-engineer. But the inputs are reasonably well understood.

For general questions, ChatGPT can answer from what its model learned during training. For anything that needs current or local information, such as "best e-bike shop near me" or "top PPC agencies for law firms", it typically searches the web and cites sources.

The second mode is the one you can influence. Training data is fixed until the next model; search results are pulled fresh every time.

Search comes from third-party providers and OpenAI's own crawler

When ChatGPT search launched, OpenAI said it uses third-party search providers and content from partners, and that Microsoft Bing is one of those providers (Search Engine Land). OpenAI also runs its own crawlers. According to OpenAI's crawler documentation:

  • OAI-SearchBot is "used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features."
  • ChatGPT-User visits pages when a user's request needs it, and is "not used for crawling the web in an automatic fashion."
  • GPTBot collects content that may be used for training models.

OpenAI's publisher FAQ is plain about the first requirement: "Any public website can appear in ChatGPT search," but you shouldn't block OAI-SearchBot if you want your content summarised and shown.

It leans on a fairly small set of trusted sources

ChatGPT rarely trusts a business's own website alone. It looks for third-party confirmation. Ahrefs' monthly tracking of US ChatGPT citations (September 2026 snapshot) puts Reddit at 16.8% of citations among top sources and Wikipedia at 7.0%, followed by review and reference sites such as Consumer Reports, plus publishers like Forbes.

For a local business or small brand, the equivalent sources are review platforms, industry directories, "best of" articles, local news and community threads.

In a study of 75,000 brands, Ahrefs found that branded web mentions correlated with ChatGPT visibility at 0.664, while Domain Rating correlated at only 0.266 (Ahrefs). YouTube mentions showed the strongest correlation of all, at about 0.737 across the AI platforms studied. Ahrefs itself notes this is correlation, not proof of cause.

The practical reading: being talked about in many places seems to matter more to ChatGPT than classic link authority.

Reviews, directories and product data feed the answer

For shopping questions, OpenAI says it selects products using "structured metadata from first-party and third-party providers," weighs reviews and ratings, and ranks merchants by availability, price and quality (OpenAI Help Center). Shopify merchants are included through Shopify Catalog, and other merchants can apply to provide a direct product feed.

For local services, OpenAI hasn't published exactly where business data comes from. Treat every major listing (Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Yelp, Facebook, your industry's directories) as a possible input.

Consistent business details make you easier to trust

AI assistants cross-check facts. In an October 2026 field test of 250 local recommendations from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, nearly all named businesses were real, but phone numbers, ratings and links were often stale or inconsistent (Ryan Doser). If your name, address, phone and services differ between your site and your listings, you make the assistant's job harder.

Why ChatGPT gives a different answer every time

Don't judge your visibility from one chat. SparkToro and Gumshoe ran nearly 3,000 tests across ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI and found under a 1 in 100 chance of getting the same list of brands twice, and about 1 in 1,000 of getting the same list in the same order (Search Engine Land).

What did hold up was frequency. Strong brands appeared in 60% to 90% of answers for a given intent, even as their position moved. So the goal isn't "rank #1 in ChatGPT". It's "appear in most answers to the questions that matter". We explain how to measure that in What is AI visibility?.

The step-by-step plan

Here's the order we'd work in for a typical small or mid-sized business. Take a dentist in Austin as a running example.

1. List the questions your customers actually ask

Write 15 to 30 real questions, in your customers' words. For the dentist: "best emergency dentist in Austin", "Austin dentist that takes Delta Dental", "Invisalign cost Austin", "gentle dentist for anxious patients Austin".

Mix category questions ("best X in Y"), problem questions ("tooth pain on a Sunday, what do I do") and comparison questions ("X vs Y").

2. Check where you stand today

Ask ChatGPT each question several times, with web search on, and note whether you're named, who is named instead, and which sites are cited. Because answers vary so much, one run per question tells you very little.

You can run this free with Nyrav's AI visibility check, which also shows the competitors named in your place.

3. Let OpenAI's search crawler read your site

Check your robots.txt and any firewall or CDN bot rules. A setup that blocks training but allows search looks like this:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

OpenAI says robots.txt changes for search take about 24 hours to apply. Many sites block AI bots by accident through security plugins, so test it with the free AI bots checker.

4. Make sure Bing can find and index you

Since Bing is one of ChatGPT's search providers, verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap. Its AI Performance report shows how often your pages are cited in Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI answers, which is a useful early signal.

5. Make your business details identical everywhere

Pick one version of your business name, address, phone number, hours and service list, and use it on your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Yelp, Facebook and every directory.

On your homepage, add Organization (or LocalBusiness) structured data and use sameAs to point to your official profiles. Google's documentation describes sameAs as links to other pages with more information about your organization, such as social or review profiles.

6. Publish pages that answer the question directly

ChatGPT can only quote what exists. If you want to be named for "Austin dentist that takes Delta Dental", have a page that says clearly which insurers you accept.

Good pages to have:

  • One page per core service, with location, pricing range and who it's for
  • An honest comparison or "how to choose" page for your category
  • A FAQ section with direct, two to four sentence answers
  • An "About" page with founding year, credentials and service area

Start each page with a plain-language answer, then add detail.

7. Get listed where ChatGPT already looks

Go back to the sources ChatGPT cited in step 2. Those are your target list. Typically:

  • Review platforms for your industry (Yelp, Trustpilot, G2, Healthgrades, Houzz)
  • Local and industry directories, chambers of commerce, associations
  • "Best X in Y" articles from local media and niche blogs
  • Relevant Reddit and forum threads, where you take part honestly and as yourself

For a PPC agency, this might be Clutch, agency directories and "top agencies for e-commerce" roundups. For an e-bike store, it's review sites, cycling publications and YouTube reviewers.

8. Earn reviews and real mentions

Ask every happy customer for a review on the platforms that showed up in your citations, not only Google. Pitch useful data or expert comments to local and trade press. Given the Ahrefs findings on web and YouTube mentions, a product demo reviewed by a respected YouTuber can be worth more than another backlink.

9. If you sell products, fix your product data

OpenAI says products appear when ChatGPT judges them relevant, using structured metadata, reviews and price. If you're on Shopify, your catalog is already connected through Shopify Catalog, so focus on complete titles, descriptions, variants, prices and stock status. Other platforms can apply for OpenAI's direct product feed. Our Shopify guide covers the store-side fixes.

10. Measure, then repeat monthly

ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links, so you can see ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics (OpenAI). Re-run your question list regularly and track how often you're named, not your position.

What doesn't work

  • Asking ChatGPT to remember you. Telling it about your business in a chat doesn't change what other users see.
  • Stuffing pages with "ChatGPT" keywords. It doesn't search for itself; it searches for your customers' questions.
  • Fake reviews or self-written listicles on thin sites. They're easy to spot, against most platforms' rules, and a reputational risk.
  • Checking once. With answers changing run to run, one screenshot proves nothing either way.

How Nyrav handles this

If you'd rather not run this by hand, Nyrav checks every week whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode name your business for your customers' questions, which competitors they name instead and which sites they cite. It then drafts the page fixes, directory profiles and outreach in a monthly plan, and nothing goes live until you approve it. Plans start at $49/month, with a 7-day free trial (pricing).

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to get my business recommended by ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI says product results in ChatGPT are selected independently and are not ads, and ads are kept separate from those results. The way in is the same as earning a good reputation online: be easy to find, easy to verify and mentioned by sources ChatGPT trusts.

How long does it take to start appearing in ChatGPT answers?

Technical fixes can register quickly; OpenAI says robots.txt changes for search take about 24 hours to take effect. Earning reviews, directory listings and third-party mentions usually takes weeks to months. Track your mention rate weekly so you can see the trend rather than guessing.

Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing?

OpenAI has said ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers plus content from partners, and Microsoft Bing is one of those providers. It also runs its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot. Being properly indexed in Bing and readable by OAI-SearchBot are both worth checking.

Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor and not me?

Usually because your competitor is mentioned in more of the places ChatGPT reads: review sites, directories, comparison articles, Reddit threads and local press. Look at which sites ChatGPT cites when it names them, then work on getting listed or mentioned on those same sites.

Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT from recommending me?

Not directly. OpenAI uses GPTBot for model training and OAI-SearchBot for search, and they are controlled separately in robots.txt. You can block training while still allowing OAI-SearchBot, which is the crawler that lets your pages appear in ChatGPT search answers.
